Many networks have a mixed environment of NetWare
servers and UNIX hosts. In such environments, an obvious
cost saving measure is to consolidate and share printers
on the network.
This poses the question: "What products will
allow NetWare to send or receive print jobs with UNIX
hosts."
Several such products exist and are available from
various vendors including Secure Design and Novell. When
shopping for an LPR/LPD product, you should check for
features such as text translations (CR/LF) and
compatibility with RFC 1179.
Novell's Solution:
The Most expensive solution is to purchase
Novell's Flex/IP package for NetWare which includes a
bi-directional print gateway. According to a Novell's
press release: "[it] allows Unix users to access
printers attached to NetWare systems and NetWare
users to access printers that are attached to UNIX
systems. ..."
Novell also provides an NFS add-on package for
NetWare. NetWare NFS provides Unix file services on a
NetWare v3.11 server also includes the Flex/IP
printer functions.
Third Party Solutions:
Secure Design: SDLPD
SDLPD is an NLM that provides the ability to
transfer print jobs between NetWare print queues and
UNIX print queues. SDLPD acts as a print
server/client that provides compatibility with most
LPR/LPD software for UNIX systems, bi-directional
transfer of print jobs between NetWare and UNIX, user
notification after a print job has been transferred,
configuration from the NetWare server console,
service for multiple queues on a file server,
automatic text translations with CR and LF characters
and host access control for incoming print jobs.
SDLPD supports NetWare 3.x and 4.x. A complete 30 day
trial copy is available at: http://www.sdesign.com/sdldp1x/
Quentin Smart: iQueue
iQueue is a pair of LPD and LPR NLMs for NetWare
3.1x and 4.x written by Quentin Smart in New Zealand.
A demo of lpdnlm.zip that runs for 1 hour then
unloads is available by: http://www.simtel.net/simtel.net/msdos/novell.html
Pegasus Mail: Charon
Charon is a bi-directional Novell print queue to
Unix LPD gateway and Internet/Novell mail gateway
program. The mail gateway section works in
conjunction with Pegasus Mail. Charon is free. It
requires a dedicated workstation to run on. Charon is
available on many ftp sites, including: http://www.simtel.net/simtel.net/msdos/novell.html
