Configuring SDFax in the Chooser

Select the Chooser item from the Apple Menu. Click on the SDFax icon. A list of items will appear as shown in the dialog to the right.

Click on each item and then the Setup button to configure your preferences. You can also double click on any item in the list.

These items include:

<Your E-mail Address>
<Coverpage Information>
<Registration>
TPC.INT
Hylafax

Click on the E-Mail item to configure your e-mail settings. You must have a valid internet e-mail account to use SDFax. All reports of status, completion, and errors will be e-mailed to this account.

Enter the name of your SMTP Mail Server. You may need to request the assistance of your ISP for the name of your mail server.

Check the Cc: Self item to make this the default for all faxes sent. When addressing the faxes you send, you will be able to request/decline a copy, this check box only sets the default.

Check Use Internet Config to read your e-mail and SMTP Mail server information from your internet config settings.

Check TPC Direct Send to allow SDFax to send the e-mail directly to the tpc fax server rather than your own SMTP server. This option is useful for persons with AOL accounts which offer no SMTP server for client use. This option is slower than using your own SMTP server, and does not support the Cc: Self feature. Use this option only when you do not have access to an SMTP server.

Click on the Cover Page item to display the following dialog. You can configure several pieces of information that will be printed on the cover page of your fax.

Many TPC FAX servers do not print the "address" line item on the cover page.

The Comments area of the cover page can contain a short message. The contents of this box will be word-wrapped, so it is best to not format your text. Simply type in a few sentences.

The comment should be short (less than 250 letters) Extra text will be truncated. Close and open this dialog to see if any text is truncated.

The Register dialog allows you to enter your Registration Name and Serial number. These items are provided when you purchase a licensed copy of the SDFax Software.

Trial Copy:

If you have not purchased SDFax for your computer, you can try SDFax for a limited time. To install an evaluation copy, just proceed without entering the Register option. You do not need to click on the Register button at all for the trial copy. If you have used SDFax for more than the trial time period, you must purchase and install a licensed copy of the software.

Click on the TPC.INT item to display the following dialog. The only item to configure is the Check TPC coverage before sending checkbox.

When checked the SDFaxSpooler will verify (with DNS) the availability of a TPC fax server to send your fax. If one does not exist, you will be prompted to re-address your fax.

If you leave this item unchecked, SDFaxSpooler will simply send your fax blindly, without verifying TPC Fax Server Coverage.

Click on the Hylafax item to display the following dialog. Enter the dns name of the fax server to use. SDFaxSpooler will communicate with the fax server on port 4559.

You will also need to supply your user name and password for the Hylafax server. If you don't know your username and password, you will need to contact your fax server administrator.

SDFaxSpooler Configuration

The SDFaxSpooler application has several features that you can modify as well. Double click on the spooler and select the Preferences menu item under the File menu.

When SDFaxSpooler begins processing a spool file, it will first check to see if there is a fax server available via the TPC fax project. If you have a slow or demand dial link to the internet (MacPPP) then the first several DNS Lookup attempts may fail. The SDFaxSpooler can be configured to re-try the lookup until a fax server is found or the TPC Sinkhole reports that no fax server is available.

The SMTP Timeout setting controls how long SDFaxSpooler will wait for a slow SMTP host. Usually, SMTP mail servers will respond in a few seconds. If the SMTP mail server takes 120 seconds to reply, something may be wrong with it and you should contact your ISP for assistance.

Processor Usage controls how much time SDFaxSpooler lets other applications run. If set to Aggressive, faxes will be translated and sent faster, but other applications will become slow.
